Pioneer men's cross country team regains MWC crown with aid of Canady's individual title

DE PERE, Wis. – One year after surrendering the Midwest Conference title, the Grinnell College men's cross country team regained it in dominating fashion Saturday at Enos Colburn Park.

Paced by individual champion Frank Canady '14, Grinnell defeated its nearest foe by 60 points en route to claiming the team title for the 15th time in the past 16 years and 25th time in the last 27 seasons.

Grinnell put six runners in the top 12 en route to scoring 33 points. Runner-up Lawrence University, last season's champ, had 93 points.

Canady became the fourth Pioneer in the last five seasons to win an individual MWC title with a clocking of 25:21.9 over the 8-kilometer course, nearly 4 seconds ahead of runner-up Jake Barr of Monmouth College.

Erik Figge '13 was next in line for Grinnell, finishing fourth in 25:46.5. Rounding out Grinnell's list of scorers were Nate Kolacia '16 (eighth in 26:00.3), Sam Krauth '14 (ninth in 26:02.1) and Ben Tyler '14 (11th in 26:05.2).

Adam Dalton '16 and Kyle Moorehead '15 were also All-Conference performers for Grinnell, as Dalton was 12th in 26:05.2 and Moorehead 15th in 26:09.7.

The meet resulted in much movement on Grinnell's all-time leader board. Canady leaped from 32nd up to 15th, Kolacia jumped in at 41st, Krauth moved from 48th to 44th and Dalton entered at No. 49.

“I was really pleased with the effort,” said Grinnell coach Will Freeman, who was voted MWC Coach of the Year. “Top to bottom, it was a total team performance. The guys have been sitting on this (not winning the title in 2011) for a year and were really waiting for this day. Today they ran like they had something to prove.

“Frank joined a select group of individual champions and we're very pleased for him,” Freeman continued. “Putting six in the top 12 is incredible, and there was only a spread of 44 seconds among all those guys. That's pretty amazing.”

Grinnell will compete in the NCAA Division III Regional Meet Nov. 10 in Northfield, Minn.
