Men's tennis team wins twice on Monday

The Grinnell College men's tennis team won its third consecutive match in Orlando, Fla., with a pair of victories Monday.

The Pioneers defeated Calvin College 6-3 and then blanked North Central (Ill.) 9-0.

In the win over North Central, Grinnell got straight-set singles victories from Ishan Bhadkamkar '13, Charlie Wilhelm '15, Benjamin Charney '15, Conor Cunningham '15, Aaron Lapkin '15 and Rob Storrick '15.

Also winning were the doubles teams of Elliott Czarnecki '15-Michael Cole '12, Colin Johnson '13-Lapkin and Jimmy Yang '15-Emilio Gomez '15.

Against Calvin, Grinnell had four singles victories – Czarnecki at No. 2, Eric Ritter '12 at No. 2, Daniel Nellis '13 at No. 3 and Bhadkamkar at No. 5.

Also winning were the doubles teams of Charney and Bhadkamkar at No. 2 and Johnson and Lapkin at No. 3.

“I have to point out that our top three players continue to play well,” said Grinnell coach Andy Hamilton. “After strong performances against Olgethorpe, Elliott, Eric and Daniel backed that up against Calvin. If we're going to have success in the Midwest Conference, we'll need points from the top of the lineup and I certainly see development with these three.

“I also want to point out very strong play by our 2 and 3 doubles teams,” he continued. “Ishan and Benjamin are coming together very well at No. 2, and Colin and Aaron have also continued to play well.

“The North Central match was great since it allowed us to expand our lineup,” he added. “One thing we have this season, maybe more than any other season, is extreme depth. I was pleased with the fact that Aaron was not only a singles winner but also a doubles winner. He and Colin continue to play well, and Jimmy and Emilio took advantage of playing in the lineup by getting a nice victory.

“We were also really excited to get the No. 1 doubles team back on track with a victory,” he continued. “Hopefully they continue to have a strong week. In singles, I really noticed Conor Cunningham is coming of age. He's a player I feel will impact our lineup in the future.”

Grinnell, 11-3 on the season, plays Hope and Augustana Tuesday.
