Bhadkamkar wins 3rd MWC singles title, Cunningham gets 1st crown

MADISON, Wis. – Grinnell College's Ishan Bhadkamkar '13 won his third Midwest Conference singles title and Conor Cunningham '15 his first at the men's league tennis meet Saturday in the Nielsen Center.

Bhadkamkar won the No. 4 crown after claiming top honors at the No. 5 spot last season and No. 6 position in 2010. Cunningham was the champ at No. 6.

Bhadkamkar defeated Alex Tande of Ripon College 6-0, 6-0 and Ryne Fertitta of Carroll University 6-3, 6-2 before winning by default over Monmouth College's Parker Featherston in the title match.

At No. 6, Cunningham posted wins over Anthony Mykhaylovskyy of Lake Forest College 6-3, 6-2 and Tyler Lampe of Monmouth 6-1, 6-3 before disposing of St. Norbert College's Nate Gosz by a 7-5, 6-2 score in the final.

Three Pioneers reached the semifinals before losing – Elliott Czarnecki '15 at No. 1, Eric Ritter '12 at No. 2 and Daniel Nellis '13 at No.3. Czarnecki had a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Erik Hane of Knox College before falling 7-6, 6-1 to Jack Michael of Carroll, while Ritter defeated Karolis Ruzgas of Knox 6-2, 6-3 and then fell 7-6, 6-0 to eventual champ David Johnson of Monmouth. Nellis posted a 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 victory over Jonathan Ng of Knox before losing 7-6, 4-6, 6-0 to eventual champ Elliot Muth of Lake Forest.

Charlie Wilhelm lost a 6-4, 6-2 decision to Craig Sherwood of Lawrence University in the No. 5 singles quarterfinals.

The tourney concludes Sunday with doubles play.
