Box Score GRINNELL, Iowa – The Grinnell College women's basketball team nearly pulled out a win in
Dana Harrold's Pioneer coaching debut Friday night, but Central College outscored the hosts 14-5 in overtime to secure an 80-71 decision at Darby Gymnasium.
Alissa Hirsh '16 of Grinnell led all scorers with 24 points, while
Anne Boldt '16 poured in 11.
Lydia Stariha '17 grabbed nine rebounds, Hirsh had three assists and
Jordan Matosky '16 came up with a game-high three steals.
Grinnell used a 10-point run to stretch its lead to 24-11 at the 7:25 mark of the first half. Hirsh and
Leah Greenberg '17 both had 3-pointers to start the spurt,
Alex Plemmons '15 had two free throws and Hirsh a layup.
However, Central roared back and went ahead near the end of the half before Hirsh's two free throws gave the Pioneers a 31-30 lead heading into the locker room.
Grinnell got out to a fast start in the second half, going up by 11 at 51-40 on Boldt's layup. Again Central raced back and went ahead 66-65 with :05 left. Boldt was fouled with :00.3 seconds left on the clock and made a free throw to force overtime.
Central scored the first four points of overtime and never looked back en route to earning the win.
Grinnell is at home again Wednesday when Wartburg College visits Darby Gymnasium. Action begins at 7:30 p.m.
