CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Grinnell College sent student-athletes to learn and present recently at the NCAA's APPLE Training Institute hosted by the University of Virginia.
This marked the fourth time Grinnell student-athletes have attended the event, with one of the more significant outcomes being the school's Student-Athlete Mentor (SAM) program.
Among those attending this year were football player Carson Dunn '18, softball player Maggie Remus '18, baseball player Nate Zaroban '18 and soccer player Lauren Hurley '18. Dunn was representing Student-Athletes Leading Social Change (SALCS), Remus represented the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and Zaroban and Hurley were there as SAM co-leaders.
Also attending were Assistant Dean of Students
Jen Jacobsen '95, who is also Director of Wellness & Prevention and Title IX Deputy for Prevention, and Sexual Respect post-baccalaureate Colton Silvia '15, a soccer and track athlete who was representing SAM.
The students had the privilege of presenting twice on the Student-Athletes as Campus Leaders in Sexual Respect Promotion and Substance Abuse Prevention. This was in recognition of Grinnell College being a leader in engaging student-athletes in this important work.
Funding for the trip has come from the Wilson Program in Leadership and Innovation, designated alumni gifts and Wellness & Prevention. The first trip in 2013 was funded via an NCAA Choices grant.
