PELLA, Iowa – Grinnell College's women's cross country team opened the 2017 campaign in dominating fashion by racing to the team title at the Central College Dutch Invitational.
The Pioneers placed six runners in the top nine while rolling up a miniscule score of 24 points, well ahead of runner-up Central, which had 49.
Emma Zimmerman '18, Anna Ahrens '19 and Cara Keleher '21 gave the Pioneers a potent punch, finishing second, third and fourth in 19:54, 19:57 and 20:00, respectively. Zimmerman's time ranks 32nd on the Pioneers' all-time 5-kilometer chart, Ahrens' time is 33rd and Keleher's 35th.
Mikayla Fujiwara '20 was seventh in 20:14, the 44th-best time in program history, and Rebecca Villa '21 completed the scoring by finishing eighth in 20:45. Also for Grinnell, Madeleine Breunig '20 was ninth in 20:49 and Ally Cottrell '21 placed 12th in 21:00.
Maddie Bach of Indian Hills Community College won the individual title in 19:36.
The Pioneers host the Les Duke Invitational next Saturday at the Grinnell College Golf Course.
