Grinnell College Athletics

Harold "Bud" Gregg '51, heavyweight wrestler extraordinaire, was undefeated on the mat in his Scarlet and Black career and also used his strength to twice earn all-conference honors as a football guard. Gregg was ahead of his time as a weightlifting advocate. "I brought my weights to Grinnell and nearly gave John Pfitsch apoplexy when I had his star basketball player (Dave Dunlop) lifting. God forbid-he might have gotten 'muscle-bound.'" "Bud", who won the college strength test in 1949, has vivid memories of another day at Grinnell: in the morning he won the intramural shot put championship and in the evening he had an appendectomy! Continuing his conditioning after graduation, Gregg in 1952, was the winner of a U.S. Army regimental physical fitness competition. He terms his post-grad handball play as "undistinguished but persistent." After a distinguished business career, "Bud" retired as senior vice-president of Stone Container Corp., a $7 billion company in 1995. Gregg, who lives in Santa Fe, continues as board chairman of packaging companies in Australia and Mexico. In response to his Hall of Fame selection, "Bud" penned these thoughts that would serve well in an admissions brochure: "I certainly have many fond memories of my sports experience at Grinnell in addition to the fine education I received. We continue to hope that Grinnell will always retain the 'Heartland of America' values."
