John Musser '56 earned his induction by being one of Grinnell's finest basketball forwards. He possessed the ability to dominate a game both by scoring and controlling the boards. A three-year letterman, John broke onto the scene as a sophomore. He was second on the team in scoring with a 17.4 average and led in rebounding with 11.1 per game. During his junior season John evolved into a national caliber player. That year the spring-legged player from Boone, Iowa, scored 21.2 points per game and grabbed an incredible 19.9 rebounds which ranked him among the top five rebounders in the nation. He also set his single-game scoring mark with 38 points against Knox. Captaining his senior squad, John put on a command performance with a scoring average of 17.3 points and 16.5 rebounds per game. He also netted a school-record 14 free throws in a game. John's three-year total of 1,103 points and 930 rebounds in 59 games set new school records in both categories. He currently ranks sixth in scoring and third in rebounding on Grinnell's all-time list. The Pioneers enjoyed success with Musser as their leader posting three winning seasons and a 34-25 record. A resident of Glendale, Mo., John is a partner in the firm of Ernst and Young.
