Neil J Goodspeed ’96 was an exceptional two-sport athlete, participating in varsity men’s soccer and golf for the Pioneers. To this day he holds some of the most impressive records for Grinnell College soccer, as well as illustrious spots in the record books of the Midwest Conference. Neil scored 46 goals and tallied 25 assists, combining for a career point total of 117, which ranks him first all-time for Grinnell, and second all-time for the Midwest Conference. Neil holds both first and second place for goals in a season in men’s Pioneer history, with 17 in 1994 and 16 in 1993. He also is tied for the most assists in a season with 12 in 1994. Combining for a total of 46 points in 1994, Goodspeed set the single season scoring record for a Grinnell men’s soccer player, which was the second-ranked season in Midwest Conference history. He was voted a unanimous First-Team All-Conference Selection three times. During his four years from 1992-1995, the team set the school record for most wins (51), with a record of 51-14-4 (37-3-1 in conference). Neil led the team to four straight conference tournament finals, with two championships. Neil was also a highly decorated golfer. While a scoring member of the team for every match of his four years; he played as the No. 1 golfer for three years, was a two-time All-Conference selection, a division medalist (top five golfers), and was voted team MVP three times. Neil was honored with the David Theophilus ’51 Award in 1996, given to an outstanding athlete in more than one sport, and also the George B. Critchett ’25 Service Award, given to the member of the graduating class with the most letters over the course of their careers. Neil graduated with an economics degree, and serves as Director of Consumer Engagement and a Senior Partner at Carmichael Lynch; one of the most successful advertising agencies in the country. Neil lives in St. Paul, MN, with his wife, Jeannie Mackenzie Goodspeed ’98, and their children, Greta and Simon. He is proudly coaching Greta’s youth soccer team.
