Grinnell College Athletics

Richard Wemer '99 earned an impressive 11 letters at Grinnell. He played four years of football, one year of basketball, and three years of indoor/outdoor track. Wemer's record on the gridiron is perhaps most impressive. His honors include being named GTE First-Team Academic All-American and Second-Team All-American Wide Receiver; he was also three-time First-Team All-Conference. Wemer was named to Don Hansen's National Weekly Football Gazette All-American Second Team and to the Hewlett-Packard Division III Third-Team All-American, both for his skills at wide receiver. In 1999, Wemer was ranked fifth in the nation for all-purpose yards and second in the nation for his punt return average of 21.4 yards per game. He was also ranked fifth in the nation for catches per game. In his senior year, Wemer scored 22 touchdowns and participated in the 1999 Aztec Bowl. In his final game of the season, Wemer scored three touchdowns, helping his team maintain an undefeated record.
Wemer didn't let up after football season, either. His senior year on the track paid off when he became the Midwest Conference indoor/outdoor long jump champion, winning the event on his last try. He was also voted the Most Valuable Player of the outdoor conference meet in 1999. After graduation, Wemer entered medical school. He is currently in his fourth year of residency in the Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Department at the University of Kansas Medical Center.
