Troy Dougherty's ('00) talent for football earned him his place in the Hall of Fame. Dougherty has garnered awards not only from Grinnell College, but also from the Midwest Conference and the NCAA. Beginning with his first year in 1994, Dougherty's performance hinted at things to come; he was named Offensive Rookie of the Year, won the Troy Barbazo Award for Most Inspirational Player, and was named Freshman Athlete of the Year. He also earned Second-Team All-Conference honors. After a two-year break, Dougherty returned to the gridiron in force. Over the next three years, Dougherty would win 21 awards and honors for his achievements on the football field, including four letters. He won the Captain's Award and the Most Valuable Offensive Back Award in 1997, 1998, and 1999. As a senior, he earned both the Mr. "K" Most Inspirational Player Award and the Morgan Taylor '26 Memorial Award for Outstanding Senior Athlete in a Single Sport. He made First-Team All-Conference as a second-year, third-year, and senior, and was a two-time Midwest Conference Player of the Year in 1997 and 1998. On top of all this, in 1998, Dougherty was NCAA Division III First-Team All-America Quarterback and the NCAA Division III Champion for passing efficiency (199.6). He was also named the CBS Sportsline Most Outstanding Quarterback in the NCAA Division III. Dougherty ended his college career with three NCAA Division III passing records and as one of only six players in Division III history to throw for more than 10,000 yards and 100 touchdowns in a career. After graduation, he played semi-professional football in the Rocky Mountain League. From 2003-06, he played for the Madison Lionz, where his record is equally impressive. He was named League MVP in 2003 and 2006, and the league's Most Valuable Offensive Player in 2005. He holds the league's single-game record for completions (30), yards (448), and touchdowns (7). Dougherty also owns the league's single-season record for completions (190), yards (2402), and quarterback rating (130.94), aswell as the career record for completions (589), touchdowns (100), and quarterback rating (123.2). Dougherty has won awards for his academic achievements as well. At Grinnell College, he appeared on the Dean's List eight times and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. He won the Helena Percas de Ponseti Senior Prize in Spanish as well. In graduate school at Iowa State University, Dougherty won the Winifred Tilden High Scholar Award for the highest cumulative GPA (4.0), and the Helen LeBaron Hilton Teaching Award for excellence in teaching by a graduate student. He earned his M.Ed. in athletic administration in 2002, and is currently at Brigham Young University in Idaho. He has helped establish the BYU-Idaho Football League, a full-contact league that began this fall with eight teams, 30 coaches, and approximately 160 players. He lives with his wife Anne and their five children.
