Lopez leads victory charge as Grinnell women's swimming and diving team sails by Loras

GRINNELL, Iowa - Sarah Lopez '26 entered her name in the Grinnell College women's swimming and diving career record leader board or improved her standing three times Saturday afternoon in the Pioneers' swim dual against Loras College.


Lopez, a quadruple winner in the Pioneers' 234-41 victory at Russell K. Osgood Pool, posted the 10th-fastest 200-yard backstroke time in program history, 15th-best 100 backstroke and 18th-fastest 400 individual medley. Her times were 1:01.46 in the 100 back, 2:12.51 in the 200 backstroke and 4:49.40 in the 400 individual medley.

Lopez also swam on the winning 200 medley relay team with Eva Cuevas '25, Camryn Gonzales '25 and Aliya Swearngin '25. Their time was 1:54.03.

Swearngin added wins in the 200 freestyle in 2:07.03, 500 freestyle in 5:47.16 and as part of the 200 freestyle relay in 1:43.02. Cuevas was the winner in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.73) and Gonzalez in the 200 butterfly (2:17.49).

Rounding out the 200 freestyle relay team were Olivia Pluska '25, Ciara Vogler '26 and Sophia Carroll '25. Pluska also won the 1650 freestyle in 19:51.29, Vogler was first in the 50 freestyle in 25.83 and 100 butterfly in 1:01.77 and Carroll was tops in the 100 freestyle in 56.31.

Maria Eure '23 won 1- and 3-meter diving with scores of 182.45 and 191.25, respectively, and Genevieve Martinez '24 won the 200 breaststroke in 2:40.81.

Runners-up for Grinnell were Annika Alsleben '23 in the 1650 freestyle (21:06.33), Maree Elliott '24 in the 100 and 200 freestyles (57.37 and 2:08.58), Andi Fox '23 in the 100 breaststroke and 500 freestyle (1:13.12 and 5:49.72), Hannah Sweet '25 in the 200 butterfly (2:31.40), Kailee Shermak '25 in the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly (26.34 and 1:05.06), Jane Markovitz '26 in 1- and 3-meter diving (136.55 and 142.85), Dorothy Anna Russell '24 in the 200 breaststroke (2:43.49) and Gonzales in the 400 individual medley (4:57.37).

Grinnell hosts the Pioneer Classic Dec. 2-3.
