Grinnell women creep closer to yet another Midwest Conference title

Pioneers looking to extend championship string on Sunday

GRINNELL, Iowa - Grinnell College's women's swimming and diving team creeped closer to another Midwest Conference title with a balanced performance on the meet's second day Saturday.


Grinnell has 573 points at Russell K. Osgood Pool and comfortably leads runner-up St. Norbert College by nearly 100.

The Pioneers won three events Saturday, including individual victories by Camryn Gonzales '25 in the 100-yard butterfly (56.81 seconds) and Sophia Carroll '25 in the 200 freestyle (1:53.73). Grinnell's other win came from Sarah Lopez '26, Genevieve Martinez '24, Gonzales and Ciara Vogler '26 in the 200 medley. Their time of 1:46.07 ranks second all-time at Grinnell.

The Pioneers were second in the day's other relay, the 800 freestyle. Carroll, Lopez, Kailee Shermak '25 and Samantha Cook '27 swam the race in 7:46.95, which ranks second all-time. Lopez was runner-up in the 400 individual medley in 4:37.14.

Third place for Grinnell went to Regan Stambaugh '26 in the 400 individual medley (4:41.88, eighth all-time), Martinez in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.01, ninth in GC history) and Jenna Kollevoll '24 in the 100 backstroke (59.20, fifth all-time). Vogler was fourth in the 200 freestyle in 1:55.97 and Ava Rodriguez '27 was fourth in the 100 breaststroke in 1:08.19. Vogler's time of 1:55.79 in the prelims ranks fifth all-time, while Rodriguez is 11th in the breaststroke.
 
Shermak and Molly Ryan '27 were fifth in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke with times of 58.84 and 59.42, respectively. Placing sixth were Natasha Zettler '27 in the 400 individual medley (4:51.81), Cook in the 200 freestyle (1:58.55) and Olivia Pluska '25 in the 100 backstroke (1:00.42). Cook's time of 1:57.33 in the 200 freestyle prelims ranks seventh in program history.

Maree Elliott '24 added a seventh-place finish in the 100 butterfly in 1:01.13.

The meet continues at 9 a.m. Sunday.
