Pioneer football team drops contest at Ripon

Box Score RIPON, Wis. – Ripon College got out to a 24-6 halftime lead on its way to a 37-21 victory over Grinnell College's football team Saturday.

The Pioneers, who fell to 2-3 in the Midwest Conference and 2-4 overall, got 109 rushing yards from TJ Schaid '13 on 22 carries. Schaid also had a team-high four catches, while quarterback Sam Poulos '16 completed 13-of-27 passes for 130 yards and two scores.

Graham Fisher '16 booted a pair of field goals, both in the first period, from 36 and 38 yards.

Ripon, also 2-3 in the MWC and 2-4 overall, got 184 rushing yards from quarterback Tom Sawyer.

Defensively, Daniel Munger '15 had seven tackles for Grinnell while Richard Renteria '15 and Kevin Hwang '14 tallied six each. Seth Gustafson '14, Colton Feller '14 and Drew Blumberg '13 all had five.

Ripon took a 7-0 lead early in the first period, but the Pioneers followed with a scoring drive of their own which was capped by Fisher's 36-yard field goal with 9:25 left. Ripon made it 14-3 later in the period before the Pioneers responded again, this time with a 38-yard field goal by Fisher at the 3:36 mark to make it 14-6.

The hosts added a touchdown and field goal in the second period to take a 24-6 halftime lead. Grinnell had the lone touchdown of the third period, a 23-yard pass from Poulos to Jacob Meixler '15 at the 12:49 mark. The five-play, 59-yard drive also included a rush of 18 yards by Schaid. Schaid ran for the two-point conversion, making it 24-14 which it remained through the rest of the period.

The hosts scored twice in the fourth period for a 37-14 lead before the Pioneers rounded out the scoring with 3:16 left when Poulos found Harnak Mann '14 on a 13-yard scoring strike. The eight-play, 58-yard drive also included a 14-yard pass from Poulos to Meixler.

The extra point by Daniel Munger '15 made it 37-21, which it remained through the end of the game.

Grinnell meets Carroll University next Saturday in Waukesha, Wis. Game time is 1 p.m.
