Box Score WAUKESHA, Wis. – Two weeks ago, the Grinnell College football team knocked off one of the top teams in the Midwest Conference with its win over Monmouth College.
History nearly repeated itself Saturday, but Carroll University was able to squeak out a 21-20, come-from-behind home victory over the Pioneers. Carroll improved to 4-2 in the MWC and 5-2 in all games, while the visitors fell to 2-4 in league play and 2-5 in all games.
The defense had a balanced attack, as
Colton Feller '14 and
Kevin Hwang '14 had nine tackles each,
Drew Blumberg '13 added eight and
Ki Harris '14 tallied six.
Seth Gustafson '14 returned an interception 25 yards for a touchdown and Blumberg also had an interception that led to a Pioneer score.
Offensively,
Sam Poulos '16 completed 17-of-32 passes for 171 yards and two touchdowns.
Jacob Meixler '16 had five catches for 74 yards and while
TJ Schaid '13 and
Dalton Davies '16 had one TD reception each.
Blumberg's interception, which came on the second play of the game, set up Grinnell's first score after Blumberg returned the ball 48 yards to Carroll's 11-yard line. Two plays later, Poulos hit Schaid with a 14-yard scoring strike.
Daniel Munger '15 kicked the point after to make it 7-0 with 13:21 left in the first period.
Three plays into the next drive, Gustafson intercepted a Carroll pass and raced 25 yards to pay dirt. The point after was no good, making it 13-0 with 11:51 showing on the clock.
Carroll scored with 5:49 left in the first period to come within 13-7, but Grinnell answered with 6:41 left in the second quarter on a 32-yard pass from Poulos to
Dalton Davies '16. Poulos also had a 55-yard pass to Meixler to spark the drive.
Munger's point after gave Grinnell a 20-7 lead with 6:41 left. However, Carroll answered with a touchdown to make it a 20-14 game at halftime.
The hosts scored on their first series of the third period and kicked the point after for what proved to be the winning point.
The only scoring chance the visitors had after that was a 43-yard field goal attempt which missed wide early in the fourth quarter.
Grinnell returns to Springer Field to face Lawrence University next Saturday. Game time is 1 p.m.
