Grinnell football team loses OT thriller to Carleton

Grinnell's Cody Weber '13 catches a touchdown pass during Saturday's game against Carleton College.
Box Score GRINNELL, Iowa– The Grinnell College football team looked well on its way to victory in the first period of Saturday afternoon's game at Rosenbloom Field.

But the Pioneers let that 14-0 lead slip away as Carleton rallied for a thrilling 20-14 overtime victory in season-opening action for both teams.

Carleton scored a touchdown to start the extra period, but left the door open with a missed extra point. Grinnell drove to the Knights' 10-yard line but could get no closer as a fourth-down pass was intercepted to end the game.

Both of Grinnell's scores came from Cody Weber '13 on pass receptions from Sam Poulos '16, who completed 22-of-35 passes for 253 yards in his collegiate debut. Weber's TD receptions were from 27 and 28 yards as he finished with 171 yards.

Grinnell outgained the visitors 305-219 as Max Jacobson '14 added 46 reception yards on seven catches and TJ Schaid '13 tallied 26 yards on four carries.

Defensively, David Ternes '15 had 10 stops, Brian Taylor '13 added eight, Drew Blumberg '13 tallied seven and Kevin Hwang '14 came up with six. Blumberg also had two interceptions.

After forcing Carleton to punt, Grinnell promptly put together a nine-play, 60-yard scoring drive. After moving down the field with no problem, Poulos finished the series with a 27-yard strike to Weber with 8:50 left in the first period. Daniel Munger '15 kicked the point after.

Grinnell later took advantage of a Blumberg interception that gave the hosts possession at the Knights' 39-yard line. After Schaid gained 9 yards on a run and Barrett Morrissette '16 gained 2, Poulos fired a 28-yard touchdown strike to Weber. Munger again had the PAT, making it 14-0 with 2:33 left in the period.

The game remained 14-0 at halftime before Carleton scored solo touchdowns in the third and fourth periods to tie the game. Grinnell had a chance to win, but Carleton blocked a field goal with 1:05 left to force overtime.

Carleton got the ball first and Andy Zweber scored three plays later on a 6-yard run. However, the extra point was no good.

On Grinnell's ensuing possession, Schaid picked up a first down to give the Pioneers' hope. After a pair of gains of 1 yard each, Carleton got a sack to push the hosts back to the 15-yard line. On fourth down, Poulos fumbled the ball, picked it up and lobbed a jump ball into the end zone. The players all scampered for the ball and when the players were unpiled, it was determined Carleton had the interception – and the win.

Grinnell returns to Rosenbloom Field next Friday to entertain Illinois College in Midwest Conference play. Action begins at 1 p.m.
