Box Score GRINNELL, Iowa – Doomed by seven turnovers and 11 penalties, the Grinnell College football team suffered a 33-7 setback to Lake Forest College Saturday afternoon at Rosenbloom Field.
The Pioneers, who fell to 0-2 in the Midwest Conference and 0-3 overall, actually outgained Lake Forest 278-270 but the Foresters were able to take advantage of Grinnell's miscues which included returning two interceptions for touchdowns.
Lake Forest, 2-0 in the league and 2-1 in all games, did not commit any turnovers and was whistled for only six penalties.
David Ternes '15 sparked Grinnell's defensive effort with 14 tackles, including six solos, to go along with a sack.
Tom Brinkman '13 added 10 stops,
Colton Feller '14 had nine and
John Mertes '15 and
Clayton Desjardin '15 had seven apiece.
Offensively,
Cody Weber '13 had nine catches for 124 yards and
Sam Poulos '16 completed 15-of-27 aerials for 177 yards.
Lake Forest grabbed a 6-0 lead before the Pioneers put together their lone scoring drive late in the first period.
TJ Schaid '13 had rushes of 12 and 7 yards to spark the series and Poulos completed passes of 16 yards to
Max Jacobson '14 and 8 yards to Weber.
Poulos later hit Schaid with a 15-yard pass and on the next play completed a 5-yard TD pass to him. The extra point by
Daniel Munger '15 made it 7-6 in favor of the hosts with 14:12 left in the second period.
Grinnell had its next two series halted on a fumble and interception, the latter which Jake Rotkvich returned 60 yards for a score as Lake Forest took a 12-7 lead into the locker room.
Lake Forest made it 19-7 in the third period after returning another pickoff for a touchdown. The Foresters tacked on two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter, a period that saw the Pioneers lose a fumble after driving the visitor's 4-yard line.
Grinnell plays its first road game of the season next Saturday at Beloit College. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
