Box Score GRINNELL, Iowa – The Grinnell College football team took advantage of the home field Saturday afternoon by blasting Beloit College 42-17.
The Pioneers, playing their home opener for the 2013 season, broke out to leads of 14-0 and 21-3 en route to the victory.
Jacob Bernholtz '17 rumbled for 157 yards on 14 carries and scored twice, and
TJ Goetz '14 completed 14-of-28 passes for 179 yards and two scores.
Jake O'Polka (four catches for 29 yards) and
Jayson Campos '14 (three catches for 50 yards) each had touchdown receptions, while
Jacob Meixler '15 added three catches for 73 yards.
Defensively,
David Ternes '15 turned in 19 tackles and
Daniel Munger '15 added 16 to go along with an interception.
Jeremy Wiles '14 had nine tackles and
Seth Gustafson '14 intercepted a pass. Overall, the Pioneers sacked Beloit's quarterback five times.
Grinnell's first touchdown was set up by a sack by
Richard Renteria '15 deep in Beloit territory. Quarterback Kameron Sallee fumbled the ball on the play and
Clayton Desjardin '15 jumped on it in the end zone.
Graham Fisher's '16 extra point made it 7-0 with 9:11 left in the first period.
Another fumble in the second period, this one on a punt attempt by Beloit, was covered by Bernholtz in the end zone with 13:47 left. The extra point by Fisher made it 14-0.
Beloit kicked a field goal with 10:36 left before Bernholtz ripped off a 59-yard touchdown run at the 9:43 mark on just the second play of a drive. Fisher's point after made it 21-3. Beloit added a touchdown at the end of the half to make it 21-10 as the teams went into the locker room.
The Buccaneers added another score at the 13:56 mark of the third period to close within 21-17, but O'Polka countered with a 13-yard TD catch from Goetz with 2:33 left. Goetz also ran for a 13-yard gain on the drive, which was finished by Fisher's extra point to make it 28-17 at the end of the period.
Munger's interception toward the end of the third period set up Grinnell's next score, a 27-yarder from Goetz to Campos. Fisher's extra point made it 35-17 with 14:51 left in the game.
Grinnell's final score was a 65-yard sprint by Bernholtz with 1:38 left. Fisher's extra point completed the scoring.
Both teams are now 1-2 in the Midwest Conference and 1-3 overall. Grinnell has a bye next Saturday and plays at Monmouth College on Oct. 12.
