Box Score NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Grinnell College dug itself into a 20-0 hole by halftime and couldn't get out as the Pioneers lost their football season opener 29-10 to Carleton College Saturday.
Grinnell saw four drives cut short by turnovers, including three inside the Knights' 20-yard line.
Sam Poulos '16 completed 36-of-59 passes for the Pioneers, including a touchdown. The completion total ranks second in school history.
Jacob Meixler '15 had 12 catches for 105 yards, while
Emmi Sandoval '16,
Aamir Walton '15 and
Jacob Bernholtz '17 had five catches for 64, 52 and 27 yards, respectively.
Defensively,
Kevin Hwang '14 had 10 tackles, an interception and fumble recovery.
Jeremy Wiles '14 and
David Ternes '15 came up with eight tackles apiece and
Colton Feller '14 tallied seven.
Carleton jumped to a 6-0 lead by the end of the first period and tacked on 14 more points in the second. After seeing their first drive of the second half end on a fumble, the Pioneers put together a scoring drive. A 14-yard pass from Poulos to
Harnak Mann '14 sparked the series, which ended with a 34-yard field goal by
Graham Fisher '16 with 5:39 left.
However, a field goal and touchdown in the fourth period allowed Carleton to go ahead 29-3. The Pioneers added a touchdown with 12 seconds to go when Poulos found
Greg Ruzich '16 on a 5-yard pass. The drive included completions of 13 and 10 yards from Poulos to Meixler, 12 yards to Walton and a 12-yard rush by Poulos. Fisher kicked the point after.
Grinnell opens up Midwest Conference play next Saturday with a game at Illinois College. Action begins at 1 p.m.
