Alex Plemmons ’15 has become the first Grinnell College woman to earn the prestigious Ruth Peterson Award for academic excellence.
The award, established in the 1983-84 academic year, goes to the Midwest Conference female student-athlete who had the highest grade point average during her junior year while lettering in at least two league sports.
It is named for Ruth Peterson, the former Commissioner of the Midwest Athletic Conference for Women who went on to serve as the Co-Commissioner of the MWC. Peterson, a Beloit College alum and employee, passed away in October of 2006.
Plemmons, a biological chemistry major from Grosse Ile, Mich. (Grosse Ile), is a member of the Pioneer women’s golf and basketball teams.
Her efforts in golf helped propel the Pioneers to the last two MWC Tournament titles and a pair of trips to the NCAA Division III National Tournament. She was all-conference all four years, finishing fourth, sixth twice and ninth another time.
As a member of the basketball team, Plemmons has appeared in 70 games, scoring 178 points, grabbing 152 rebounds and blocking 14 shots while shooting 60 percent from the floor.
