Grinnell College volleyball players have claimed many big awards in the program's 49-year history, particularly in recent years.

One award had eluded the Pioneers during that span, but that all changed today with one of the biggest honors a college student-athlete can earn - a spot on the College Sports Communicators Academic All-America® Team. Payton Lowrey '22, a record-breaking libero from St. Louis, Mo. (Cor Jesu Academy), collected third-team honors in the NCAA Division III category.

Lowrey is one of just 22 players, and the only one from the Midwest Conference, to be honored at the Division III level. She is one of six players on the third team, while the first and second teams each had eight selections.

Besides being Grinnell's first volleyball player to earn Academic All-America@ recognition, she is just the 26th Pioneer overall to be honored. Lowrey is the first student-athlete at Grinnell to be named Academic All-America@ in a women's sport in nearly 10 years.

The Academic All-America Team@ recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the court and in the classroom. The squad is selected by members of the College Sports Communicators (formerly College Sports Information Directors of America, or CoSIDA), including Grinnell Sports Information Director Ted Schultz.

The chemistry major was the MWC Player of the Year and ranked eighth nationally in digs per set at 6.18 and 11th in digs with 649. Both of those figures are school records.

Lowrey's other school records included aces in a three-set match (nine), digs in a three-set match (33), career aces (210), career digs (2,067), career digs per set (4.64) and career set played (445). She led Grinnell to 80 victories in her career and a combined MWC record of 27-7, including a league tournament title and berth in the NCAA National Tournament in 2019.
