Will Freeman

Through the spring of 2019, Freeman has led the Pioneers to 32 Midwest Conference titles in cross country and track and field, with 29 of those coming in cross country. He has coached beginners to national champions while at Grinnell, and was named the NCAA Division III Central Region Coach of the Year in 2010. Freeman attended the University of Florida where he competed as an internationally-ranked pole vaulter. He won five SEC titles in the vault, received All-America recognition and was finalist at the U.S. Olympic Trials.

He is a former National Chairman for Coaching Education for the USA Track & Field and holds Level III certification as a coach and as a Level II instructor. A much sought-after clinician speaking at clinics both around the U.S. and internationally, he has also written three books, many articles and 19 training videos for coaches of all levels. He has trained coaches and athletes throughout the US, in Canada, the Bahamas, and Africa. Besides his duties as cross country and track coach, Freeman is an Associate Professor at Grinnell College and teaches popular courses in the Foundations of Sports Psychology and Sport Sociology.

He has been at Grinnell since 1980. He was inducted into the University of Florida Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010. Freeman’s wife Evelyn is the women’s cross country and track coach at Grinnell.
