Jeannin's late scoring flurry sends Grinnell past Monmouth

Box Score In a meeting at Monmouth College two weeks ago, the Grinnell College women's basketball team used a big second-half rally to pull out the victory.

It was a case of déjà vu Wednesday at Darby Gymnasium, as Grinnell's Ashley Jeannin '12 scored the game's final 10 points to help the Pioneers rally for a 60-57 victory.

The 10 Midwest Conference wins are the most for a Grinnell team since the 2003-04 season, and it marked just the fourth time in program history the Pioneers have reached double-digit league wins.

Additionally, the victory over the league's second-place team keeps Grinnell in strong contention to qualify for the MWC Tournament.

Jeannin led all scorers with 15 points to go along with six assists, while teammate Michelle Briggs '13 posted another double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds to go along with four blocks.

Grinnell, 10-6 in the MWC and 11-9 overall, also got 12 points from Megan Huey '12.

Haley Jones scored 14 points for the Fighting Scots, who fell to 11-4 in the MWC and 12-8 overall.

With her team trailing 57-50 with 4:34 left, Jeannin went to work. She first drained a free throw with 3:48 left and hit a 3-pointer at the 3:10 mark to make it 57-54.

She then tied the game with a trey at 2:11 and put Grinnell ahead to stay on a free throw with 1:41 remaining.

She added two more charity shots with :27 left to put the Pioneers ahead by three.

Monmouth had four shots in the closing seconds but couldn't convert as Grinnell hung on to win. In all, the Pioneer defense held the Fighting Scots without a bucket in their final nine tries.

The first half was back and forth, with Monmouth holding a 32-30 lead at intermission. It was still a tight game with 6:24 left before the Fighting Scots turned a one-point edge into a lead of seven, a run that was followed by Jeannin's late-game heroics.

Grinnell plays Illinois College Saturday at Jacksonville, Ill. Game time is 1 p.m.
