APPLETON, Wis. - The Grinnell College women's team had a banner performance at the USA Ultimate Division III National Championships recently, placing second in the 16-team event.
After going 1-2 in pool play, the team – known as the Sticky Tongue Frogs - caught fire and rattled off wins in the playoffs against Mary Washington (9-7), Bowdoin (15-8) and Haverford (14-11) before losing a 13-12 decision to Claremont in the title contest.
Addtionally, Grinnell emerged in a close battle with St. Olaf to win the Team Spirit Award.
The sport of Ultimate combines the non-stop movement and athletic endurance of soccer with the aerial passing skills of football. The game is played by two seven-player squads with a high-tech plastic disc on a field similar to football. The object of the game is to score by catching a pass in the opponent's end zone.
