Grinnell women's basketball team wins critical game over Lake Forest

Box Score GRINNELL, Iowa – Playing in a game critical to keeping its hopes alive for making the Midwest Conference Tournament, the Grinnell College women's basketball team delivered.

The Pioneers rolled past Lake Forest College 63-49 Saturday afternoon at Darby Gymnasium to move into a three-way tie for fifth place in the league standings. Those three squads are just a half-game out of fourth.

A pair of Pioneers recorded double-doubles, as Tolu Alabi '13 tallied game-highs of 15 points and 13 rebounds while Michelle Briggs '13 added 14 points, 10 boards and two steals.

Abby Jaeger '14 was also in double figures with 13 points, while Alissa Hirsh '16 dished out five assists and Anne Boldt '16 came up with three steals.

The Pioneers, who limited Lake Forest to just 22.6 percent shooting from the floor in the first half (7-of-31) and 31.1 percent for the game, improved to 7-6 in the league and 8-9 in all games.

Lake Forest, also 7-6 in the MWC and 9-9 overall, had two players score 12 points each.

A big run to end the first half proved to be the difference in the game. Grinnell was up by just a point with 2:43 left when Alabi sank two free throws and Kelly Clarke '13 made two more to make it 26-21.

Alabi and Briggs followed with layups and Hirsh made a pair of charity shots to send Grinnell into the locker room with a 32-21 lead.

The Pioneers pushed their lead as big as 14 points in the second half before Lake Forest made things interesting, coming within five twice. The last of those instances was when K.C. Stralka made a shot to make it 46-41 with 6:44 left.

But Grinnell answered the call, scoring six consecutive points for a 52-41 edge with 4:16 left. Briggs had two free throws to begin the run, while Hirsh and Boldt made layups.

After Lake Forest scored, Grinnell put the game away with a seven-point run. Hirsh made a layup, Jaeger nailed a free throw and Briggs and Alabi each connected on layups to put the Pioneers ahead 59-43 with 1:48 left. The Pioneers continued to cruise to close out the victory.

Grinnell has another home game Tuesday as Knox College visits Darby Gymnasium. Game time is 7 p.m.
