Big 2nd half sends Monmouth past Pioneer women's basketball team

Box Score GRINNELL, Iowa – The Grinnell College women's basketball team was tied with Monmouth College at halftime, but the Fighting Scots outscored the hosts 37-25 in the final stanza for a 61-49 victory Wednesday night at Darby Gymnasium.

Alissa Hirsh '16 scored 13 points for the Pioneers, who fell to 0-3 in the Midwest Conference and 0-5 overall, while Anne Boldt '16 poured in 10. Boldt also had five rebounds and three steals.

Hirsh added three steals and three assists. Lydia Stariha '17 dished out three assists, as well.

Grinnell went ahead by seven twice in the first half, the final time at 20-13 when Sophia Gatton '17 drained a 3-pointer with 7:52 to go. After Monmouth rallied to tie things at 20-all, Cristal Coleman '15 and Hirsh each hit free throws and Ariel Keller '17 connected on a layup to put Grinnell up by four.

However, Monmouth came back to tie the contest at 24-all by halftime. The game remained close in the second half, with Grinnell taking its final lead at 35-33 on Gatton's jumper with 11:29 to go. There was one final tie at 39-all before the visitors responded with a 13-0 run to pull away.

With the win, Monmouth improved to 1-2 in the MWC and 4-2 overall.

The Pioneers entertain St. Norbert College Saturday at Darby Gymnasium. Game time is 3 p.m.
