Box Score GRINNELL, Iowa – The Grinnell College and Central College women's basketball teams have grown accustomed to playing thrilling games, and Saturday afternoon's contest at Darby Gymnasium was no different.
Kenzie Vander Molen sank two free throws with 4 seconds left to propel the Dutch to a 52-50 win in the season opener for both teams.
Kayla Morrissey '18 got her Pioneer career off on a strong note with a game-high 15 points, while
Alissa Hirsh '16 added 10 points and three assists.
Alex Neckopulos '17 grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds and
Lydia Stariha '17 added three assists.
Grinnell broke away from a 15-all tie in the first half with a 10-point run, as Hirsh made consecutive baskets,
Sophia Gatton '17 hit a 3-pointer as did
Kaitlyn Norton '17 for a 25-15 edge with 9:57 left in the half.
Central got as close as four before the Pioneers pulled away again for a 36-30 edge at halftime.
The Dutch rallied in the second half to take the lead before Grinnell grabbed its final lead at 47-46 on Hirsh's jumper with 6:16 left.
However, Central responded to go back in front before Grinnell gave one last burst, tying it at 50-all on a pair of free throws by Neckopulos with :21 left.
Vander Molen was fouled on the next possession and hit both free throws. Grinnell's ensuing inbounds pass was stolen, preserving Central's victory.
Grinnell takes to the road Tuesday to play Wartburg College in Waverly. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
