Lake Forest pulls away to defeat Pioneers

Box Score LAKE FOREST, Ill. – The Grinnell College women's basketball team lost a 73-44 Midwest Conference decision at Lake Forest College Saturday afternoon.

The winners, who led 34-24 at the break, improved to 5-8 in the league and 5-13 overall. Grinnell is now 1-12 in the MWC and 2-16 overall.

Sophia Gatton '17 scored a team-high 14 points for the Pioneers, who were again without one of the league's leading scorers, the injured Alissa Hirsh '16. Gatton also had two steals, as did Anne Boldt '16. Boldt added seven rebounds, as well.

Cristal Coleman '15, Haley Lopez '17 and Leah Greenberg '17 had one block apiece.

Grinnell kept it close early, taking the lead on some occasions including 15-13 when Coleman made a layup with 10:26 left. Lake Forest answered with a seven-point run to go up by five before Alex Neckopulos '17 and Boldt each scored baskets to bring the Pioneers within 20-19 with 7:35 left.

It was still just a two-point Forester lead when Greenberg's 3-pointer made it 26-24. Lake Forest responded with an eight-point spurt to finish off the half, though.

The Foresters scored the first six points of the second half to all but secure the victory.

The Pioneers head to Galesburg, Ill., on Wednesday to face Knox College. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
