Pioneer softball team's rally falls just short against Westminster

GRINNELL, Iowa – The Grinnell College softball team saw a last-inning rally fall just short as Westminster College held on for a 10-8 victory over the Pioneers in the second game of a twin bill Thursday.

Westminster also won the opener 9-5.

In the second game, the visitors built an 8-0 lead through two innings before the Pioneers stormed back with a run in the bottom of the second on Melissa Anderson's '18 RBI double to center field and three runs in the third with the aid of Megan Gibson's '17 two-run single through the left side and RBI doubles to left by Kristina Weber '16 and Anderson.

After Westminster scored two runs in the fourth, the Pioneers shut the visitors down the rest of the way.

In the bottom of the seventh, Andi Leff '18 and Sage Juveland '17 led off with singles before Kayla Morrissey '18 delivered an RBI single. An error allowed another run to score before Gibson belted a run-scoring double down the left-field line to make it a two-run game.

However, Westminster was able to finish off the win.

Gibson was 3-for-3 in the game, while Lydia Stariha '17, Leff, Juveland and Anderson all had two hits.

Westminster got out to a 5-0 lead in the first game before Grinnell scored a run in the second on Anderson's RBI triple to left-center. After Westminster went up 7-1 in the top of the third, Leff's RBI double to right-center in the bottom of the inning cut the gap to five.

The teams traded runs in the fifth, with Grinnell's being scored on an RBI groundout by Leff. Westminster made it 9-3 in the seventh before Grinnell got two runs in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI double to left by Gibson and run-scoring single to right by Weber.

Weber was 4-for-4 at the plate for Grinnell, while Stariha, Leff, Morrissey and Anderson had two this each.

Westminster improved to 8-11 with the wins, while the Pioneers fell to 0-14.

Grinnell entertains Mount Mercy Saturday in a twin bill. The first pitch is slated for 11 a.m.
