GRINNELL, Iowa – For the Grinnell College women's soccer team, turnabout was fair play Saturday afternoon.
Four days after losing to an Iowa Conference team by a 2-1 score, the Pioneers beat another by the same score in a double overtime thriller at Springer Field.
Jordan Maddaus '19 recorded the match-winning header with 8:43 left in the second overtime period to lift Grinnell to a victory.
The goal was assisted by
Nora Sahel '18, her second of the game as the Pioneers evened their mark at 1-1. Simpson is now 0-1.
The contest-winning goal began when the ball was thrown in from the right side. Sahel took it and dribbled to the right sideline where she kicked it into the box. Maddaus was on the spot and headed it over the elevated goal keeper for her first collegiate goal.
There was no score at halftime before Simpson took a 1-0 lead in the 65th minute. Time was running short for the Pioneers before
Carolyn Silverman '17 delivered some heroics, scoring with just 4:19 left in the second period on assists from Sahel and
Kristen Stacey '16.
Sahel started the play with a corner kick from the right side. Stacey then got a touch on the ball before Silverman headed the ball over the keeper into the right side of the net.
Grinnell won the shots battle 13-7, with Silverman taking five and
Shaina Zarkin-Scott '18 and Stacey two apiece.
Katy Oldach '16 had another stellar effort as Grinnell's keeper, turning away five Simpson shots.
The Pioneers have their annual Alumni Game Sunday at noon at Springer Field.
