Pioneers roll to milestone victory over Simpson

GRINNELL, Iowa - It was a huge milestone performance on many fronts for the Grinnell College volleyball team Tuesday night.

The Pioneers' four-set victory over Simpson College at Darby Gymnasium snapped a 16-match losing streak to the Storm, dating back to 1977.

The 25-23, 25-14, 24-26, 25-16 win was also Grinnell's first over an Iowa Conference team in the last 18 tries, and the Pioneers are now at double-digit wins for the first time since 2010.

Grinnell, 10-9, got a stellar hitting night from Evelyn Weidman '17 as she had 13 kills on 29 attempts with just two errors for a .379 efficiency. Olivia Fromm '17 added 10 kills.

Fromm also had five aces serves and Emily Friedman '19 four as Grinnell piled up 18 aces on the night. Sydney Vrecenar '18 and Fromm had 18 and 15 digs, respectively, and Weidman came up with three solo blocks.

Margaret Giles '18 added 29 assists.

The first set was tight the entire way and saw 13 ties, including 23-all when Weidman and Emma Willhardt '19 finished off the win with kills.

Grinnell shot out to a 4-0 lead in the second set. Simpson still hung close before the Pioneers turned a 9-4 lead into a 14-5 edge. Fromm served five points as Grinnell went on to win easily.

The Pioneers looked poised for the sweep after going up 23-20 in the third set, but the 8-11 Storm reeled off six of the next seven points to win.

Grinnell got out to a 7-2 lead in the fourth set, with Giles serving two of those points. The hosts never let the Storm closer than two points after that on its way to securing the victory.

The Pioneers entertain Illinois College in Midwest Conference action Saturday. The match at Darby Gymnasium begins at 1 p.m.
