Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Ted Schultz

Pioneers score season-high goal total while rolling over Lawrence

GRINNELL, Iowa – High-scoring explosions and home finales seem to go hand in hand for the Grinnell College men's soccer team.

After scoring a season-high goal total in the final home contest of 2015, the Pioneers repeated that feat in 2016 as they rolled through Lawrence University 5-0 on Sunday's Senior Day.

The win at Springer Field helped solidify the Pioneers' postseason chances. They improved to 4-2-1 in league play and 8-5-1 overall, which are both the best marks for the team at this point since the 2010 season.

Not only did Grinnell score a season-high amount of goals, the Pioneers also fired off season-highs of 21 shots and 10 shots on goal.

Major May '17 added a shutout at keeper while making four saves.

Grinnell's offense was sparked by Kyle Buse '20 and Antonio DiMarco '18, who each had two goals. Buse now has three goals on the year and DiMarco two.

Another Pioneer, Matt Record '20, got the scoring going in the 37th minute with his second goal of the year. On the play, Buse shot the ball and it bounced out of the keeper's hands. Record followed that up with a successful shot from the right side.

It remained 1-0 through halftime before Grinnell punched out two goals in a 10-minute span to pull away. Buse scored in the 55th minute when he, after Lawrence tried to clear a corner, fired and scored from the top of the box.

DiMarco added a goal in the 65th minute on Evan Sorenson's '19 assist. On the play, Sorenson crossed the ball to DiMarco, who brought it up the middle and scored.

DiMarco added another goal in the 72nd minute. On the left side of the goal with two defenders guarding him, DiMarco passed the ball between the legs of one of the defenders and shot from the left side to back right of the net.

Buse finished off the scoring in the 89th minute when he sent a shot from the middle of the box into the right side of the goal.

DiMarco led Grinnell with five shots, while Buse had four, Nick Brule '17 three and Carlos Piedrasanta '20 and Record two each.
