Grinnell men's soccer team takes huge step toward MWC Tourney with win over Ripon

RIPON, Wis. – Grinnell College took a huge step toward reaching the Midwest Conference Men's Soccer Tournament Saturday afternoon by cruising to a 4-1 victory at Ripon College.

The Pioneers spread the wealth offensively, with four different players scoring goals. That included goal keeper Major May '17, who tallied the first goal of his career when he scored on a penalty kick.

Grinnell is now 5-2-1 in the MWC and 9-6-1 overall, while Ripon fell to 0-7 in the league and 4-11 overall. The Pioneers' overall record is their best since 2008 and the MWC record is their best since 2010.

The Pioneers went to work quickly, as Antonio DiMarco '18 scored in the fourth minute on an assist by Artis Curiskis '18. On the play, Curiskis passed to the front center of the goal and DiMarco delivered it into the lower right part of the net for his third goal of the year.

Curiskis now has 15 career assists, which puts him third on the Pioneers' all-time list.

Ripon scored in the 27th minute to tie it before May gave Grinnell the halftime lead when he tallied a penalty kick in the 41st minute.

In the second half, Curiskis recorded his fifth goal of the season in the 55th minute for a 3-1 lead. On the play, Francisco Sanchez-Conde '18 got the assist. The ball came off a ricochet and Curiskis put it into the lower left of the net.

Matt Record '20 scored with a ball off the right post and in during the 72nd minute to complete the scoring. It was Record's third goal of the season.

May recorded four saves in 69 minutes at keeper. Michael Nattinger '18 and Jared Cloutier '20 also saw time in goal.

Grinnell won the shots battle 19-5, with DiMarco taking six and Curiskis and Record two apiece.
