GRINNELL, Iowa – The Grinnell College women's basketball team not only continued to remain red hot, but reached a milestone Saturday in a 62-61 win over Lake Forest College at Darby Gymnasium.
By moving to 12-4 in the Midwest Conference, Grinnell has now won more league games than any in season in program history. The Pioneers stretched their winning streak to six games and have won 10 of their last 11.
Grinnell has also won the third-most overall games in its history by improving to 15-6.
Sophia Gatton had 18 points for Grinnell, while
Kayla Morrissey and
Lydia Stariha had 10 each. Morrissey also dished out three assists and
Alex Neckopulos grabbed 11 rebounds.
Lake Forest led 15-13 after one period, but the Pioneers roared back for a 30-21 halftime lead.
Grinnell led 44-37 after three periods and went up 55-45 on a basket by Neckopulos with 3:48 left.
Lake Forest closed within two twice before
Anne Boldt gave the Pioneers a bit of breathing room with a free throw with 9 seconds left to make it 62-59. The Foresters scored a basket in the waning seconds to round out the scoring.
Lake Forest fell to 9-7 in the MWC and 11-10 overall.
