MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Grinnell College capped a perfect weekend of volleyball Saturday morning, posting its second sweep in a row with a 3-0 victory over Alverno College.
Set scores were 25-22, 25-17 and 25-14.
The Pioneers, 6-7 on the season, hit a solid .253 as a team with the leadership of
Emma Willhardt '19 (eight kills, .500) and
Evelyn Weidman '17 (eight kills, .353 efficiency).
Margaret Giles '18 added 19 assists, while
Sydney Vrecenar '18 served up four aces.
Sidney Litke '19 added three aces and Oliva Fromm '17 and
Christine Hood '17 had two each.
Vrecenar led the team in digs with eight and Willhardt had two solo blocks and two assists.
Grinnell trailed the first set 20-19 before going on a key five-point run, in which Fromm had two kills and Weidman one. That led to the three-point win.
In the second set, the Pioneers broke away from an 11-all tie with a 9-3 run. Vrecenar served up three aces and Willhardt had a kill as Grinnell sailed to victory.
The third set was never in question as the Pioneers bolted out to a 10-3 lead and never looked back.
With the loss, Alverno falls to 3-15 on the season.
Grinnell jumps back into Midwest Conference play Wednesday with a contest at Cornell College.
