Team effort propels Pioneers to easy soccer win over Lawrence

APPLETON, Wis. – It literally was a "team" performance for the Grinnell College women's soccer squad in its 4-0 blanking of Lawrence University Sunday afternoon.
 
Three different Pioneers scored goals, five had assists and a dozen took shots as the Pioneers outshot the hosts 38-4 while improving to 4-2 in the Midwest Conference and 7-6 in all games. The win was key for the Pioneers as they continue to battle for a spot in the MWC Tournament.
 
Shaina Zarkin-Scott '18 scored a career-high two goals, also her first two of the season, to push Grinnell ahead 2-0. Her first goal came in the eighth minute on assists by Kitt Richards '18 and Celeste Kaspar '21. It marked Richards' second assist of the year and Kaspar's first.
 
It was 1-0 at halftime before Zarkin-Scott struck again after a scramble in front of the net in the 50th minute.
 
In the 56th minute, LilyRose Weiss '18 scored her first goal of the year on an assist by Lauren Edwards '20, her first of the season.
 
Richards gave the Pioneers some insurance in the 81st minute with her second goal of the year on assists by Simona Bambi '20 and Michellie Thurman '19. It was Bambi's second assist of the year and Thurman's first.
 
Regan Kasprak '19 worked her third shutout of the year at keeper, making three saves.
 
Grinnell dominated the shots battle, with Richards taking nine shots, Bambi eight and Zarkin-Scott, Weiss and Esmé Kayim-Yanko '21 four each.
 
Grinnell steps out of MWC competition Thursday to play at Nebraska Wesleyan University. The kickoff is at 4 p.m. in Lincoln, Neb.
