Late surge pushes Cornell past Pioneer women's soccer team

GRINNELL, Iowa – Grinnell College owned the shots battle, but Cornell College - with the aid of two late goals - came away with a 3-2 women's soccer win Wednesday afternoon at Springer Field.

The Pioneers outshot Cornell 27-5 for the day. Grinnell opened the scoring in the sixth minute when Valencia Alvarez '20 tallied her team-high sixth goal on an assist by Esmé Kayim-Yanko '21. On the play, Kayim-Yanko made a nice pass to Alvarez cutting up the middle of the field. Alvarez broke away with it, putting the ball into the right corner of the net.

Cornell tied things in the 33rd minute to force a 1-all halftime tie.

Grinnell took the lead in the 51st minute when Kayim-Yanko tallied her first goal of the year on Alvarez's assist. Alvarez took the ball to the right corner of the field and kicked a beautiful cross in front of the box. Kayim-Yanko received it and booted it past the keeper to the bottom left corner of the net.

However, Cornell tied it in the 66th minute and took the lead for good in the 82nd minute.

Grinnell is now 5-3 in the Midwest Conference and will earn a spot in the league tourney with a win Saturday at home against Monmouth College. The Pioneers are 9-7 overall, while Cornell moved to 3-5 in the MWC and 4-14 in all games.
