GRINNELL, Iowa - The Grinnell College softball team was particularly hungry for victory after losing three games in a row last weekend.
The Pioneers accomplished their goal Thursday afternoon, filling their appetites with a doubleheader sweep of Iowa Wesleyan at the Softball Complex.
Grinnell won the opener 5-1 behind
Maggie Remus' '18 six-hit pitching performance, and
Melissa Anderson '18 took a perfect game into the fifth inning of the second game and finished with a three-hitter in a 4-0 shutout victory.
Anderson's performance marked the fewest hits she's allowed in a seven-inning game and was her second shutout of the season.
Additionally,
Lydia Stariha '19 tied the Grinnell career record for runs scored with 79.
Stariha had two of Grinnell's seven hits in the opener, including a double.
Mikyla Murphy '19 also doubled.
Grinnell scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning when Murphy belted a two-run double off the left-field fence, scoring
Kayla Morrissey '17 and Stariha.
The Pioneers tacked on three more runs in the third inning with the aid of three hits and two errors. Morrissey had an RBI single to right-center to plate Stariha, Remus hit a run-scoring single to left to push across Morrissey and
Megan Gibson '17 scored on an error.
Iowa Wesleyan completed the scoring with a run in the fourth inning. Remus improved her pitching record to 3-7 and struck out one batter.
Stariha had two of Grinnell's six hits in the second game, and
Emily Jordan '19 doubled.
The Pioneers got three runs in the first inning without a hit.
Sage Juveland '17 and Stariha scored when Morrissey reached base on an error, and Murphy sent Morrissey across the plate with a groundout to shortstop.
The Pioneers tacked on one run in the second when Morrissey's single up the middle scored Stariha.
Anderson sat down the first 13 batters she faced before the Tigers got an infield single with one out in the fifth inning. She struck out four batters in moving her pitching record to 4-6.
Also during the games, Stariha moved into second on Grinnell's career at-bats list with 370, took sole possession of second place on the career stolen bases chart with 26 and is third in hits with 126. Morrissey moved into second on the hits list with 128.
Grinnell improved to 7-13 with the wins, while Iowa Wesleyan dipped to 9-15.
The Pioneers jump back into Midwest Conference play Saturday with a twin bill at Illinois College. Action in Jacksonville, Ill., begins at 1 p.m.
