MOUNT VERNON, Iowa –
Lydia Stariha '17 made some history Tuesday night in Grinnell College's softball doubleheader at Cornell College.
The Pioneer senior collected two hits in the first game to move into a tie for the program lead for career hits. She is now at 136, which ties Darcy Ward, who played from 2006-2009.
Grinnell lost both games, falling 11-3 in the opener and 8-0 in the nightcap.
Grinnell also tied a season record for doubles Tuesday with 49, matching the total of the 1999 team.
In the opening game, Stariha and
Emily Jordan '19 led the offense with a double and single each, while
Sage Juveland '17 belted her first home run of the season.
Cornell grabbed a 3-0 lead before the Pioneers got on the board in the third inning on Juveland's solo homer to left. It was the fifth round-tripper of her career.
Cornell bounced back in the bottom of the third with five runs for an 8-1 lead. Grinnell scored in the fourth on
Megan Gibson's '17 RBI single to center to plate Jordan, but the hosts countered with a run in the bottom of the inning.
Grinnell came within 9-3 in the top of the fifth when
Kayla Morrissey '18 scored after
Maggie Remus '18 hit a single which was followed by an error. Cornell scored in the fifth and sixth innings to finish off the win.
Remus was the pitcher of record for Grinnell and struck out three.
The Pioneers were limited to two hits in the second game, those by Jordan and
Andi Leff '18. Anderson was the pitcher of record.
Besides Stariha, also making a move on Grinnell's career list was Juveland for at-bats. She now has 341, which ranks ninth in program history.
Stariha ranks second for assists in a season with 100 and seventh in at-bats with 106. Morrissey is fifth in runs scored with 24 and, as a team, Grinnell's 296 assists this season rank fifth all-time and the 101 RBIs by the team rank sixth.
Grinnell is now 7-9 in the Midwest Conference and 11-19 overall, while Cornell moved to 13-3 in the league and 25-7 in all games.
The Pioneers conclude MWC play Saturday with a doubleheader against St. Norbert College in Janesville, Wis. The first pitch is at 3 p.m.
Grinnell then finishes its 2017 campaign Sunday with a home twin bill against MacMurray College. Action at the Softball Complex begins at 1 p.m.
