Pioneers celebrate win in season finale while breaking 3 school records

GRINNELL, Iowa – The Grinnell College men's soccer team finished its 2018 campaign on a dominating note Saturday, blanking Illinois College 3-0 while setting three school records at Springer Field.
 
The Pionees' new records came for assists in a season with 31, assists per game in a season with 2.07 and shots on goal per game in a season with 8.60.
 
Jasper Yang '21 scored two of Grinnell's goals to give him 12 for the season, which is the 10th-best mark in program history. Noah Fluharty '19 celebrated Senior Day with an assist on the first goal, which came in the 18th minute when he delivered a corner kick that Yang sent into the goal. It was Fluharty's fourth assist of the year.
 
Just three minutes later, Yang scored again on an assist by Mikoto Kobayashi '20. On the play, Kobayashi was on the left side of the box and booted the ball into the middle, where Yang scored. It was Kobayashi's team-high eighth assist, which ranks fourth in program history. He finished the year averaging 0.53 assists per contest, which is fourth all-time.
 
Grinnell's final score came in the 37th minute on an own goal. Grinnell won the shots battle 21-11, with Kobyashi taking six, Ray Goedeker '22 and Henry Cladouhos '22 three each and Zac Reeves '20 and Yang two apiece. Jared Cloutier '20 posted his third shutout of the season and made four saves.
 
For the season, Yang averaged 1.93 shots on goal per game which ranks third in Pioneer history and had 29 shots on goal overall, which is fifth. As a team, the Pioneers moved into the season top 10 list for points (eighth with 91), points per game (ninth with 6.07), shots attempted (ninth with 233), shots per game (third with 15.53) and shots on goal (third with 129). Yang is 10th for career shots on goal with 45, while Cloutier moved to eighth in career games for a goalkeeper with 37 and ninth in saves with 112.
 
Grinnell, which got a big boost from its depth in the game by playing 20 players, finished the season at 5-4 in the Midwest Conference and 8-7 overall, while the Blueboys dipped to 2-6-1 in the MWC and 5-12-1 in all games.
