Career day all around as Pioneers fire off 48 shots in 6-0 shutout win of Illinois College

GRINNELL, Iowa – It was a career day all around as the Grinnell College women's soccer team tuned up for the Midwest Conference Tournament with a 6-0 shutout of Illinois College Saturday afternoon at Springer Field.
 
The Pioneers ripped off 48 shots in the game, 11th-best in program history and the highest total since 2007. Jordan Maddaus '19 and Gwen Holtzman '19 celebrated Senior Day with career-highs of three and two goals, respectively. The seven overall points by Maddaus and four from Holtzman were also career-bests.
 
Elyse Salpekar '19 had the other goal as Grinnell finished league play with a 7-2 record, their most MWC wins since 2012. Grinnell is 9-6-1 overall while the Lady Blues fell to 2-7 in the MWC and 6-12 overall.
 
Valencia Alvarez '20 and Esmé Kayim-Yanko '21 each had career-bests of two assists. Elizabeth Hunt '21 and Hannah Malicky '22 teamed up on the shutout at keeper, the Pioneers' fifth of the year. Hunt made two saves while getting the win.
 
Maddaus opened the scoring 10 minutes in when she scored from left of the box off a pass from Alvarez, and four minutes later Salpekar scored after receiving a pass in the middle from Maddaus and weaving through the defense for a goal. It was the fourth goal of the season for Salpekar.
 
Grinnell made it 3-0 by halftime when Holtzman scored in the 34th minute on a header off Kayim-Yanko's corner kick. Maddaus got the Pioneers off to a great start in the second half, scoring in the 47th minute after receiving a straight-on pass from Michellie Thurman '19.
 
In the 51st minute, Holtzman scored her fifth goal of the year when she repeated her header goal from the first half off another corner kick by Kayim-Yanko. The Pioneers completed the scoring in the 68th minute when Maddaus scored her team-high ninth goal of the year, a long shot off a pass from Alvarez to complete the hat trick.
 
Eliza Bunnell '19 and Maddaus each had seven shots, Kayim-Yanko took six, Salpekar and Thurman had five each, Alvarez took four and Issy Schwiebert '21 three. All but Alvarez's shot total were career-bests.
 
As a team, Grinnell has 130 shots on goal this season which ranks 10th in program history. Hunt has 69 saves, which also ranks 10th, and has started 24 games at keeper in her career which is 10th.
 
The Pioneers play in the MWC Tournament next weekend in Galesburg, Ill.
