CLERMONT, Fla. – Grinnell College's softball team remained perfect on its spring break trip Tuesday, rolling over Worcester State University 8-1.
Grinnell's
Andi Leff '18 had a stellar day at the plate, going 3-for-4, while
Darice Wheeler '21 boosted her season home run total to three with a three-run blast.
Wheeler helped her own cause as the winning pitcher, giving up just five hits and striking out two in a complete-game effort.
Leff had one of Grinnell's four doubles. The others came from
Kayla Morrissey '18,
Mikyla Murphy '19 and
Ashley Wehrenberg '19.
Grinnell scored all the runs it would need in the second inning as
Melissa Anderson '18 delivered a sacrifice fly to right field and Leff scored on a wild pitch.
The Pioneers burst things open with a five-run fourth inning. Wheeler plated three runs with a homer to center field, Morrissey added an RBI double to left-center and
Leila Bishop-Parise '21 sent an RBI single through the right side.
Worcester State got its lone run in the bottom of the fourth, but the Pioneers retaliated in the fifth when Wehrenberg's double through the left side delivered a run.
Leff moved up to fifth on Grinnell's career doubles list with 22, while Morrissey is seventh with 21. Additionally, Morrissey is now third in career runs scored with 76 and sixth in at-bats with 351.
Grinnell's second game Tuesday against Wesleyan University was not started due to a weather delay.
