2 players tie school records, team breaks mark for doubles in a season as Pioneers roll by Beloit

LOVES PARK, Ill. - Grinnell College's softball team had two players tie school records and enjoyed its biggest offensive output of the season Tuesday in a doubleheader sweep of Beloit College.

Kayla Morrissey '18 tied a school record with six RBIs and Darice Wheeler '21 tied the mark of four hits in a 19-3 victory over the Buccaneers in the second game. Grinnell's run total and RBI total of 19 rank second-best in program history, and the Pioneers' 18 hits are fourth-most in a game. Additionally, the eight doubles on the day pushed Grinnell to a new season record with 51, beating the previous best from last year. Five doubles in a game also ties a school record, as do the two double plays turned in each game.

Both Wheeler and Morrissey had two doubles among their totals as Grinnell moved to 16-5 overall and 5-1 in the Midwest Conference. The win total ranks fourth in program history. Beloit fell to 3-24 overall and 0-7 in the league.

Leila Bishop-Parise '21 swung the big bat for Grinnell in the opener, going 3-for-4 at the plate with a pair of triples. Flynn Johnson '21, Andi Leff '19 and Ashley Wehrenberg '19 had two hits each in Grinnell's 14-hit attack.

Beloit led 1-0 after one inning, but then the Pioneers got going in the second as Melissa Anderson '18 swatted an RBI double down the right-field line, Wehrenberg plated a run with a single to left, Bishop-Parise hit a run-scoring infield single, Johnson had an RBI single to center and Mya Davis '21 walked with the bases loaded.

Beloit cut the gap to 5-3 in the third, but the Pioneers got solo runs in the fourth on Johnson's RBI double down the left-field line and the fifth on an RBI single up the middle by Wheeler.

Grinnell got two more runs in the sixth when Wehrenberg hit a ground-rule double to left-center and Morrissey hit into a groundout.

Wheeler was the winning pitcher, striking out seven batters in six innings.

In the second game, Grinnell fell behind 1-0 in the first inning before erupting for 11 runs in the top of the second. Morrissey bashed a three-run double, Wheeler had a two-run double and Anderson an RBI double. Leff hit an RBI single, Morrissey, Bishop-Parise and Jordan drew bases-loaded walks and Wehrenberg was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Grinnell made it 15-1 in the fourth as Morrissey had a two-run double and Wheeler and Mikayla Murphy '19 added run-scoring singles.

Wheeler's two-run ground-rule double made it 17-1 in the fifth and Haley Hoffman '21 added a two-run single.

Maggie Remus '18 was the winning pitcher, striking out two in three innings of work.

On the career charts, Leff moved up in three Grinnell categories. She is now fourth in at-bats with 371, fifth in RBIs with 57 and 10th in hits with 114. Morrissey is fifth in walks with 38.

The Pioneers travel to Monmouth College on Thursday for another league twin bill.
