Pioneers make history with doubleheader sweep of St. Norbert

GRINNELL, Iowa  – Grinnell College's softball team continued its hot streak and made some history in the process Saturday.

The Pioneers swept past St. Norbert College 8-5 and 10-6 at the Softball Complex to improve to 19-6, marking the best start in program history. The 2003 was the previous leader in that category with 17 wins at this point.

Other school records Saturday came in the form of most total bases and walks in a season with 411 and 94, respectively. Additionally, Grinnell has won eight of its last nine and the 19 wins rank third in program history.

Darice Wheeler '21 picked up the pitching wins in both games while improving to 9-2. She came on in relief in the opener and struck out five in 3-1/3 innings of work, and helped herself at the plate with her 12th and 13th home runs of the season.

She had three hits in the game and five RBIs, while Leila Bishop-Parise '21 and Emily Jordan '19 added two hits each.

St. Norbert scored in the top of the first, but Grinnell answered in the bottom of the inning on Wheeler's two-run homer to right-center. The Pioneers made it 3-1 in the second on an unearned run. After the Green Knights countered in the top of the third, Grinnell went ahead 5-2 in the bottom of the inning on a two-run double to right-center by Mya Davis '21.

St. Norbert tied it at 5-all in the fourth, but Wheeler's three-run bomb to left-center in the bottom of the inning made it 8-5. It stayed that way the rest of the game.

Grinnell dug a hole in the second game, falling behind 6-0 before rallying. The Pioneers went to work in the bottom of the third as Wheeler was intentionally walked with the bases loaded and Davis hit a two-run single to left.

Grinnell took the lead for good in the fourth with four runs. Kayla Morrissey '18 had an RBI single to left, Bishop-Parise pushed across a run with a single to right, Wheeler knocked in a run on a fielder's choice and Maggie Remus '18 hit an RBI single through the left side.

Grinnell put up three more runs in the sixth as Wheeler had an RBI on a fielder's choice and Davis hit a two-run single to center.

Bishop-Parise had three hits in the game and Davis two. Wheeler struck out three in a complete-game effort.

On Grinnell's career chart, Andi Leff '18 is now second in games started with 127 and third in games played with the same amount. Jordan moved into the 10th spot for putouts with 242.

Grinnell entertains Lawrence University Sunday on Senior Day. Action begins at 1 p.m.
