Busy Pioneers see early leads disappear in losses at Cornell

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa – Playing its fifth doubleheader in eight days, the Grinnell College softball team grabbed early leads in both games before losing twice to Cornell College Tuesday.

Breaking records has become a regular occurrence for the Pioneers this season, and Tuesday was no different as Darice Wheeler '21 became the program's all-time season leader in doubles with 14 and walks with 20.

Kayla Morrissey '18 and Flynn Johnson '21 each had two hits in the opening game, which the Pioneers lost 7-4. Grinnell scored twice in the first inning as Maggie Remus '18 hit an RBI single down the right field line and Johnson lifted an RBI single to right.

Cornell came back to take a 7-2 lead before the Pioneers rallied in the seventh as Wheeler hit a two-run double.

Remus was the pitcher of record, striking out one in four innings of work.

Wheeler had two hits in the second game, which saw Cornell use a six-run second inning for an 11-7 win. Wheeler had two hits for Grinnell, including a solo homer in the first inning after Ashley Wehrenberg '19 had done the same for a 2-0 Grinnell lead.

After Cornell went up 7-2, Grinnell slowly chipped away. In the third, Morrissey had an RBI groundout and Mya Davis '21 knocked in a run with a double to right-center.

The Pioneers cut the margin to one in the fourth as Wheeler walked with the bases loaded and Leila Bishop-Parise '21 scored on a passed ball.

Cornell scored in the top of the fifth, but a wild pitch in the bottom of the inning pushed Grinnell within 8-7.

The Rams added two runs in the sixth and another in the seventh to secure the sweep and improve to 7-5 in the Midwest Conference and 19-15 overall. Grinnell is 10-4 in the league and 21-8 in all games.

Wheeler pitched a complete game for Grinnell, striking out six.

Grinnell continued to have movement on the career chart, as Morrissey is now second in assists with 265 and ninth in chances with 459. Remus moved up to 10th in games played with 121 and Wehrenberg ranks 10th in walks with 31.

The Pioneers have a big weekend approaching as they attempt to qualify for the MWC Tournament for the first time since 2006. They meet Lake Forest College Saturday in Janesville, Wis., and are at Ripon College Sunday.
