GRINNELL, Iowa – Grinnell College's softball team wrapped up its regular season Tuesday at the Softball Complex, losing to non-conference foe Wartburg College 6-4 and 14-3.
Kayla Morrissey '18 set the Grinnell school record for at-bats in a season with 131 during the day, passing the mark of 125 by
Lydia Stariha two seasons ago.
Ashley Wehrenberg '19 had two hits in the opener for Grinnell, which saw its season mark go to 23-12. Grinnell led the game 3-0 when
Mya Davis '21 belted a three-run homer to left to score Morrissey and
Darice Wheeler '21.
Wartburg answered with two runs in the second inning, three more in the third and one in the seventh. The Pioneers got a run back in the bottom of the seventh when
Flynn Johnson '21 hit an RBI single to center field to score Wheeler.
The second game saw a two-hit offensive performance from
Leila Bishop-Parise '21. Both teams scored in the second inning, with Grinnell's run coming when
Megan Gardner '20 hit an infield RBI single to plate Johnson.
Wartburg, 17-17 on the season, tallied four runs in the fourth inning and nine more in the fifth. The Pioneers got two runs back in the bottom of the fifth as Wehrenberg scored on a wild pitch and Bishop-Parise belted an RBI triple to right to score
Melissa Anderson '18.
Grinnell saw some movement on its career chart, as
Maggie Remus '18 is now fourth in games played with 126 and Anderson ninth with 122. Wehrenberg is eighth in career walks with 34.
The Pioneers' season continues at the Midwest Conference Tournament this weekend at Lake Forest College. The third-seeded Pioneers meet second-seeded Illinois College at 10 a.m. Friday.
