Grinnell gets out to 4-0 start for first time in nearly 2 decades with pair of wins Saturday

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. - Grinnell College's volleyball team accomplished something it hasn't done in nearly two decades this weekend at the Illinois College Tournament.
 
The Pioneers won all four matches, sweeping all its foes in three sets, to start a season with a 4-0 mark for the first time since 1999. After winning two matches Friday, Grinnell added to that with two more Saturday.

Kaylin Kuhn '21, who was named to the All-Tournament Team, had 13 kills in a 25-16, 25-21, 25-21 victory over Greenville College. Emma Willhardt '19 added 12 kills while hitting .667, tied for the sixth-best mark in program history. Grinnell hit .326 in the match, including .343 in the deciding set. Julianna Roth '22 added 39 assists and Kuhn and Roth each had three aces as the team accumulated 11.
 
Payton Lowrey '22 came up with 12 digs and Sophia Carbajal '21 four total blocks. Hannah Taylor '21 came up with three blocks.
 
Grinnell closed out the tournament with a 25-22, 25-21, 25-18 win over MacMurray College. Kuhn again led the way at the net with 20 kills, while Lowrey tallied 10. Roth distributed 36 assists, while Madison Smith '20, Sidney Litke '20 and Roth each had two aces. 
 
The Pioneers came up with 61 digs, including 19 by Smith, 15 from Lowrey and 13 by Julia Welch '22. Willhardt had three total blocks and is now tied for 10th at Grinnell in career solo blocks with 81.
 
Grinnell plays at Simpson Tuesday night.
