GRINNELL, Iowa – Grinnell College's volleyball team made quick work of Faith Baptist College Tuesday night, sweeping the Eagles in under an hour by scores of 25-13, 25-7 and 25-11 at Darby Gymnasium.
Grinnell rolled up 15 aces in the contest, the third-best figure in program history for a three-set match, and
Emma Willhardt '19 hit a blistering .692 with 10 aces and just one error in 13 attempts. The mark is fifth-best in program history. Conversely, the Pioneers limited Faith Baptist to a negative .140 hitting percentage.
Sidney Litke '19 led Grinnell in aces with five, while
Julianna Roth '22 added four to go along with 23 assists.
Kaylin Kuhn '21 had eight kills and hit .312, while
Hannah Taylor '21 contributed seven kills.
Julia Welch '22 had 11 assists,
Payton Lowrey '22 contributed 14 digs and Willhardt had two blocks.
Grinnell used an 8-0 run to pull away in the first set to go ahead 21-11 after being up just 13-11. Litke served an ace in that span, while
Sophia Carbajal '21 and Kuhn each had kills. The Pioneers fed off that momentum in the second set, using a 10-point run to stretch out to an 11-1 lead. Roth served up four aces in that time and Kuhn pounded down two kills. Litke had a five-point service run later in the set to secure the win.
It was more of the same in the third set as Lowrey opened up with a six-point service run including two aces and a kill. Litke later had a four-point serving run as Grinnell grabbed an 11-3 lead and never looked back. Litke also finished the set, and match, with the final two service points. Fittingly, Willhardt pounded down a kill to end things as the Pioneers improved to 6-4 and Faith Baptist dipped to 5-4.
Grinnell travels to St. Paul, Minn., this weekend for the Macalester Invitational.
