Pioneer women's soccer team bursts out to 3-0 league start for 2nd season in a row

GRINNELL, Iowa – History finds a way of repeating itself, and the Grinnell College women's soccer team is proof of that.

For the second year in a row, the Pioneers have burst out to a 3-0 start in Midwest Conference play. They achieved that feat Sunday with a 2-0 blanking of Lawrence University at Springer Field.

The Pioneers, who improved to 5-3-1 overall, reeled off 39 shots in the game with 19 of those on goal. They also held a 17-1 edge in corner kicks and limited Lawrence to just three shots.

The Pioneers opened the scoring in the 30th minute when Gwen Holtzman '19 scored her second goal of the season and sixth of her career on Simona Bambi's '20 team-high third assist. Bambi hit Holtzman with the ball on the left side, and Holtzman sent it into the lower right corner of the net.

Grinnell scored again in the 52nd minute on Esmé Kayin-Yanko's '21 first goal of the season and second of her career as she shot from the right corner and nailed it into the lower left corner of the net.

Keeper Elizabeth Hunt '21 posted her second shutout in a row for Grinnell and third of her career. She had one save. Valencia Alvarez '20 and Jordan Maddaus '19 had six shots each for Grinnell, Bambi and Elyse Salpekar '19 added five each, Holtzman, Lauren Edwards '20 and Eliza Bunnell '19 came up with three apiece and Kayim-Yanko and Crys Moosman '22 recorded two each.

With the loss, Lawrence fell to 0-3 in the MWC and 0-10 in all games. The Pioneers host Knox College in a key league battle next Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
