GRINNELL, Iowa – Grinnell College knew it faced a big challenge when Carleton College visited Springer Field for a women's soccer contest Thursday.
But the Pioneers were up for that challenge, going toe-to-toe with a team that had tied the nation's 13th-ranked squad last week and forcing overtime before losing 1-0.
Leading Grinnell's charge was a stingy goal keeping performance by
Elizabeth Hunt '21, who turned away seven shots in the contest. Hunt was particularly sharp in the late going when it counted , using diving saves to knock away the ball in both the 75th and 85th minutes. In all, five of Hunt's saves came in the 45-minute second half.
After seeing its offense shut down in the first half, Grinnell came to life in the second half and had a few scoring chances with the aid of a pair of corner kicks.
Simona Bambi '20 and
Valencia Alvarez '20 took Grinnell's shots, and both were on goal.
The Pioneers, 0-2-1 on the season, play at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake Sunday. The Knights, who ended the game in the 98th minute, are now 2-0-1.
